Coaching Staff

Coach Thornton has spent more than 25 years in wrestling as an athlete and coach, with his career closely connected to the C. Milton Wright wrestling program.

A 1999 graduate of CMW, Thornton was a two-time state champion, four-time state placewinner, and finished his high school career with 114 victories. He returned to the sport as a coach in 2012, joining the staff at John Carroll as an assistant. During his four seasons with the Patriots, he helped lead the program to its first and only MIAA team championship while coaching five individual state champions and nine National Prep All-Americans.

Thornton became the head coach at C. Milton Wright in 2016 and has since developed the Mustangs into one of Maryland's most consistently successful public-school programs. Under his leadership, CMW has won over 150 dual meets, three UCBAC tournament titles, and four Regional Dual championships. The Mustangs have also compiled a 57–5 conference record over the last six competed seasons and have not lost to a Harford County opponent since 2022.

Individually, Thornton has coached seven state champions, 23 state medalists, 26 UCBAC champions, and 13 regional champions at CMW. He is the only coach in Harford County history to earn more than 100 career victories as both a wrestler and a head coach.

Through Churchville Wrestling, Thornton is bringing the same developmental system, coaching standards, and long-term vision that have helped build the CMW program to wrestlers at every stage of their development. His goal is to create a close-knit, community-based program where young wrestlers can develop their skills, confidence, toughness, and love for the sport while preparing to succeed at the high school level and beyond.
